Weaving Workshop from Neema Crafts on Vimeo.

In the weaving department we weave locally produced cotton which we dye on site into beautiful kikoi and scarves and also into lengths of woven fabric which our tailors assemble into a range of bags, clothing and other beautiful goods.
Weaving is a great craft to teach people with disabilities as people with a wide range of ability levels can work together. Some looms use hands only and whilst others need the use of one or two legs. Weaving is also a very therapeutic activity and many of the physically disabled workers who come to us have been through immense trauma and suffering in their lives. The process of creating something beautiful with their hands surrounded by others who have similar stories to theirs and the ability to earn a good wage to support themselves and their families in a good environment is a fantastic way to help people come to terms with what has happened to them and to renew themselves.
Benjamin Chaula heads up the weaving department, he has learnt to weave at Neema Crafts and has become a highly skilled artisan. He manages all the day-to-day activities in the workshop from design to job allocation. If you have ordered or purchased one of our scarves or woven goods, Benjamin is the man who has made that product a reality! At Neema crafts every department is headed by a deaf or disabled person.
